Enterprise Market to Outpace
Home/SOHO Market for US WLAN
Equipment by 2005
Retail Logistics, Federal
Government, and Hospital Sectors
to Lead Growth
Washington, DC – September 11,
2003 – Purchases of WLAN
hardware from large US private
and governmental enterprises
will exceed purchases from
households and small-office,
home-office entities (SOHOs) for
the first time in 2005,
according to new research by
telecommunications consultancy
ForceNine Consulting. In recent
years, the emerging WLAN market,
principally made up of products
adhering to the 802.11 series of
standards, has been driven
primarily by households and
small businesses. ForceNine
projects that this will change
with the emergence of the
federal government and hospitals
as major sectors adopting WLANs,
and with the continued growth of
early adoptors such as the
retail logistics sector.
These and other findings were
published in ForceNine’s most
recent research report titled “Sectoral
Analysis of US
Enterprise WLANs: Adoption,
Applications, and Barriers to
Growth.”
Based on interviews with IT
executives across eight key
economic sectors, this new
report provides a detailed look
at emerging applications,
security concerns, barriers to
adoption, and the role of VoIP
in WLAN adoption for each
sector. The report provides
insight as to how the
differences in sector needs and
adoption rates will influence
the national market for
enterprise WLANs.
“The federal government sector
is the largest untapped market
for WLANs” said Dr. Samuel Book,
co-author of the report.
“Security concerns have
prevented implementations in
most agencies, but IT managers
indicate that there is a
considerable pent-up demand for
WLANs if security concerns can
be satisfied.” Also related to
security, ForceNine found that
in several sectors, IT
executives were limiting WLAN
deployment due to security
concerns, but were unaware of
solutions such as WPA which may
alleviate their concerns.
ForceNine projects North
American enterprise WLAN
purchases to reach one billion
dollars by 2005. ForceNine
further projects that annual
North American enterprise WLAN
spending per enterprise employee
will reach nearly $13 by 2005.
“Sectoral Analysis of US
Enterprise WLANs: Adoption,
Applications, and Barriers to
Growth”
can be purchased from ForceNine
Consulting for $1,450.
Individual sectors may also be
purchased separately.
