Project Shift of Voice Traffic
to Wireless, but Data Continues
to Lag
Washington, D.C.- July 1, 2005
- Five times as many U.S.
wireless users expect they will
use wireless almost exclusively
for voice communications in five
years as compared with their
current usage. Today, only 10
percent of U.S. wireless users
conduct over 75 percent of their
calls over wireless. That number
is expected to increase to 50
percent by 2010. These findings
are from a new survey conducted
by ForceNine Consulting and
SMS.ac. By contrast, wireless
users that use wireless for at
least three-quarters of their
email and short messaging are
expected to grow from 3.7
percent today to 14 percent in
2010.
“There has been significant
discussion of the percent of
Americans that have cut the
cord. However, we often lose
sight of the fact that cutting
the cord is a natural extension
of voice traffic gradually
moving from wired to wireless
networks,” stated Andrew Roscoe,
Partner with ForceNine
Consulting and lead analyst on
the study. “Consumers may or may
not be comfortable in completely
cutting the wireline cord, but
it is clear that they intend for
the vast majority of their
traffic to be wireless. Wireline
phones may be increasingly
relegated to a safety or backup
function. Ironically, this was
the role of wireless for
consumers in its early years,”
stated Roscoe.
Women were somewhat more likely
than men to indicate they would
move the vast majority of voice
traffic to wireless, with 62
percent of women stating they
would make over 75 percent of
their calls wirelessly by 2010,
but only 42 percent of males
indicating this intensity of
wireless use. However, on the
data side, women and men
projected a move to wireless at
about the same rate.
The survey was designed by
ForceNine Consulting and sent
out to SMS.ac’s global community
of mobile phone users in March,
2005. Approximately 50,000
registered members responded to
the survey questions worldwide,
with about 6,000 respondents in
the US.
